Roof Cleaning in St. Petersburg, FL

The black streaks running down your roof aren’t just unsightly. They’re alive. And every month they spread further, those streaks are slowly damaging your shingles, shortening your roof’s life, and dragging down your home’s curb appeal. The good news is that proper roof cleaning, done with the right technique, can restore your roof to like-new appearance and dramatically slow regrowth for years.

Under Pressure Pro Wash & Haul Patrol Junk Removal provides professional roof cleaning services across St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park, Gulfport, Tierra Verde, Seminole, Treasure Island, and the surrounding Tampa Bay area. We use soft washing techniques approved by major shingle manufacturers, biodegradable cleaning solutions, and trained technicians who understand Florida roofs. We’re BBB accredited, fully insured, and in business since 2021.

What Are Those Black Streaks on My Roof?

Most homeowners assume the dark streaks on their roof are dirt or mold. They’re not. They’re caused by an algae called Gloeocapsa magma, and it’s slowly eating your shingles.

Gloeocapsa magma feeds on the limestone filler used in asphalt shingles. It thrives in warm, humid environments with regular moisture, which makes Florida one of the most hospitable climates in the country for it. The algae starts as small spots, typically on the north or shaded side of your roof, then spreads as airborne spores carry it across the entire roof surface.

The visible black streaks are a symptom. The actual damage happens underneath: the algae traps moisture against your shingles, accelerating granule loss and reducing the reflective properties that keep your attic cooler. Over time, this can shorten the lifespan of an asphalt shingle roof by years, and in Florida’s already-harsh roofing environment, every year matters.

Why Soft Washing Is the Only Right Way to Clean a Florida Roof

Walk around any neighborhood in St. Petersburg and you’ll see roofs in three categories: clean, streaked, and damaged. The damaged ones almost always trace back to one thing: high-pressure roof cleaning.

High-pressure washing on a shingle roof can:

  • Strip protective granules from shingles

  • Force water under shingles, causing leaks

  • Damage soft tile or crack older clay tiles

  • Void your shingle manufacturer warranty (most warranties explicitly require soft washing only)

  • Damage flashing, vent stacks, and roof penetrations

  • Drive water into your attic

Soft washing solves all of this. Instead of relying on pressure to physically remove the algae, soft washing uses a biodegradable chemical solution to kill the algae at the root. The cleaning solution dwells on the surface for a controlled time, then is rinsed away with low pressure (typically under 500 PSI, less than what comes out of your garden hose). The result is a clean, undamaged roof with results that last 4 to 6 years before significant regrowth.

This is why every major shingle manufacturer (GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed, and others) approves only soft washing for cleaning their products under warranty.

Roof Types We Clean

We’re trained to handle every common roof type in Florida.

Asphalt Shingle Roofs The most common roof type in Pinellas County. Soft washing is the only safe and warranty-compliant cleaning method. We use cleaning solutions calibrated to remove Gloeocapsa magma and other biological growth without damaging granules or strips.

Tile Roofs (Clay and Concrete) Common in higher-end neighborhoods and historic homes. Tile is more delicate than it looks. Pressure washing can crack tiles or force water beneath them. Soft washing safely removes moss, lichen, and algae buildup that traps moisture against tiles.

Metal Roofs Standing seam, corrugated, and shingle-style metal roofs. Soft washing is appropriate for most metal roofs. We adjust chemistry to avoid corrosion concerns on certain metals.

Flat and Low-Slope Roofs Common on commercial buildings and some residential additions. Flat roofs accumulate biological growth quickly due to standing water and shaded conditions. We clean flat roofs carefully to avoid damaging membrane systems.

Our Roof Cleaning Process

When you book a roof cleaning with Under Pressure Pro Wash, here’s what to expect.

  • Free roof inspection. We’ll come out, inspect your roof, identify any damaged areas, and quote the cleaning honestly. If we see issues that need a roofer’s attention before cleaning (broken tiles, missing shingles, damaged flashing), we’ll tell you upfront.

  • Scheduling. Most roof cleaning jobs are scheduled within the same week of the quote. We monitor weather and work around storms.

  • Pre-service prep. We rinse all landscaping thoroughly before applying any cleaning solution. We move or cover anything that shouldn’t get wet. We let you know when chemicals are being applied so pets and family stay inside.

  • Application. Our trained technicians apply the soft wash cleaning solution from a ladder using extension wands, never walking on the shingles. The solution is mixed on-site to the right concentration for your specific roof type.

  • Dwell time. The cleaning solution does its work for 15 to 30 minutes. You’ll see the algae start to lift and discolor visibly during this time.

  • Soft rinse. A low-pressure rinse washes away the dead algae, the cleaning solution, and the loosened debris. Landscaping gets another rinse for safety.

  • Walkthrough. We walk the property with you, point out the results from ground level, and make sure you’re satisfied. Payment on completion.
